Client Situation: “I’m thinking of becoming a coach — now what?”
Debra, a successful sales manager for a large educational services corporation, heard about coaching through a friend who had been coached during a career transition. Debra, unhappy in her management position, liked what she heard about coaching. She decided to hire Lisa to experience coaching firsthand and to explore the possibility of becoming a professional coach herself. She believed that she was intuitively using a coach-approach in managing her sales force.
The Process
Early in the coaching relationship with Lisa, Debra became clear that she was ready to move out of her current position to become a professional coach. She enrolled in a coach training program within the first two months of coaching. In addition to making a career change, Debra also wanted to address the areas of her life that she had been neglecting — self care and work/life balance. Debra and Lisa created a plan that included the following:
• A time frame for completing coach training and resigning from
her full-time position
• A time line and business development plan for Debra’s
coaching business
• A vision of what self care and work/life balance meant for
Debra. This included hiking, biking and taking a cooking class.
The Outcome
Debra worked with Lisa for approximately one year. During that time she successfully completed her coach training courses, had several paying clients and was well on her way to becoming a certified coach. When the executive team at her company learned that she was planning to resign, they offered her a lucrative consulting position that included coaching top sales professionals within the company. Debra made sure to carve out time each week for fun, and she joined a local hiking club and got back to riding her bicycle, an activity she loved. She also signed up for a cooking class and established a close friendship with another woman who was enrolled in the class.
Client Testimonial
Working with Lisa enabled me to make changes in my life that I would not have accomplished on my own in such a short period of time. The support and structure of the coaching relationship was extremely helpful, especially when I questioned if I was doing the ‘right’ thing! Lisa’s coaching style was a perfect fit for me — her quiet confidence, strong intuition, powerful questions and astute insights challenged me to stretch myself with amazing results!
